Have you ever noticed how each new item purchased is carefully wrapped and packaged in a box that fits it perfectly? This is true whether the package is shipped or if it is purchased at a local department store. And the reason is very simple; the packaging is done for protection.

But few of us hang on to each and every box and wrapper we receive items in. For example, we get a new computer, take it out of the box and begin using it, and the box is history. That means that when we decide to move we have to find other ways of protecting the computer. In other words, we have to find a box that our computer will fit in. The same is true for most of the items we own.
While a few boxes, bubble wrap, and storage tubs may be a start in our packing supplies, in reality, we will need much more. Ideally we will have 10 – 15 boxes available in at least three sizes, small, medium and large. Bubble wrap works great for some things but another idea is to use sheets, towels, washcloths, and other household linens to pack and cushion breakables.
Adding a washcloth between each dish is often all you need for ample protection. You will need lots of tape to tape the boxes shut. A tape dispenser comes in very handy. Depending on how many people will be packing, you may want to have two or more tape dispensers. It’s a good idea to have several markers available to label the boxes. Having each box marked with the contents and even which room the box belongs in will save time and trouble when you arrive at your destination.
Fortunately you don’t have to run all over town to collect your supplies. Most moving companies have various storage containers available, as well as other items that make moving easier. Moving pads are an example of such items. These rather large pads are used for cushioning. They are made of a quilted material which provides significant protection for furniture pieces and other larger items.
In most cases, inexpensive moving boxes can be purchased either individually or in bundles. In fact, quality companies like ABF U-Pack Moving (800-934-6388) will even deliver boxes to the customer’s door. Because they understand that customers do not want to buy boxes they do not need, U-Pack Moving has a tool available at their site that helps determine exactly how many boxes will be required.
All in all, proper packing can result in peace of mind. After all, knowing that your keepsakes and valuables are safe is a nice feeling. Unpacking items only to find them broken can be upsetting, which of course, is not a good way to start out life in a new home.
